Colloquial expressions and slang

Like any other language, everyday English is full of colloquial expressions and slang. Coursebooks don't always introduce them to students, but movies and songs can be a great source of this kind of vocabulary. Here is an interesting quiz to try: look at the pictures illustrating different expressions, read the sentences and choose the correct meaning. There are several levels to try!

Hello,

I'd just like to say that the link you've added is very interesting. I don't have a site for my students yet but when I do I'd like to add something like that. How do you do it? How do you add a link to the post itself?

Thanks,

Angela

Olá, Mônica.

What a fun (and rather challenging) quiz!

The choice of slang items was interesting. Most were common, but there were one or two that I hadn't heard. I could figure out the meanings through context, but they were still new to me.

This kind of quiz is SO MUCH BETTER than something static.

I admire your creativity, Mônica! Parabéns!

Um abraço!

Hi Dennis,

I often have a hard time understanding slangs and very colloquial expressions in my own language, and it amazes me how much I still need to learn! :-) I find it absolutely fantastic that languages should change so quickly, with people finding new uses for old words!

Grande abraço!
