Let's play tennis!

Sports fans will probably want to keep an eye on the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (London) for the next ten days. This is the site of the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world - Wimbledon - and it's the only Grand Slam championship played on a grass court rather than on a clay or hard court. You can find more information about this year's edition checking their official website.

And how about trying some activities? Learn the most important vocabulary related to the game and then try a crossword puzzle. Or find words related to tennis in this wordsearch activity!

What is your favourite sport to play and to watch? Listen to six people talking about theirs and answer the comprehension questions. Remember that all passages are accompanied by a tapescript, in case you want to read while listening. Have fun!

Hi All,

The vocabulary link is nice! I've learned things I really didnt know and things I had never understood properly.

Here is the list I benefit from this vocabulary link:

1. Ball boy/girl: this is so nice! Shall I translate it to portuguese? NO! ehehe...

2. Love: honestly, for hundreds of years I have heard the refferee saying like 'thirty lo%#$' and thought what is referee really saying, eventhough the meaning was quite obvious!

3. All: first time I have heard of it!

4. Let: I have always mislistened to it. I play tennis for fun and in Brazil we tend to say NET, which is wrong.

5. Ground stroke x Half-volley: still dont get very much the difference among these expressions.

Have fun,

Ronaldo.

Hi Ronaldo, I used to have the same problem with "Let"... I always heard and said "Net!" until I was corrected by a friend of mine, who used to be a semi-professional tennis player! Living and learning! :-)
